One of the biggest movies on Netflix has been 2019's The Platform, which became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. It wasn't just about people needing content to watch, but about the themes: humanity being greedy and backstabbing each other.

It all took place inside a Spanish prison, and now, the Netflix sci-fi movie is back with a sequel. Of course, there are very important things to know going into The Platform 2 in terms of rules and the backstory inside this dystopian jail.

It has 333 levels, with food being sent down via a floating concrete platform. Those at Level Zero and the higher levels will be able to feast and gorge as seen fit. The masters are testing them to see if they will leave food for the others below. Of course, given human nature, most of the food is eaten, causing the lower levels to starve.

Chaos reigns below, with people jumping down levels and fighting for food. Some kill each other and others resort to cannibalism to survive. One cannibal who enjoyed this life was Trimagasi -- a villain in the first film. He enjoyed the chaos, deeming it a perfect reflection of humanity. Thematically, this concrete slab represented the morals and conscience of mankind. In Trimagasi's case, he gave up on trying to be a good person.

Goreng May Have Lived Through His Ordeal

Trimagasi ended up feuding with one of his cellmates, Goreng. The latter didn't want to become a monster like Trimagasi. However, he did have to compromise here and there. It resulted in him killing Trimagasi, but also, becoming wounded after fighting with other villains. A big part of his story was to find a young girl he was told existed. He didn't want her to be in this ecosystem, where she could be found, assaulted or abused. Goreng, however, was mentally and physically fraying in that psychological thriller.

Goreng got to the bottom level, sent the girl up to the masters on the slab, and decided that she was the "message" -- not all people were murderers, even in their most desperate of times. The movie kept it vague, hinting maybe he died and was hallucinating. But that's the open-ended, thought-provoking statement that director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia mapped out. Did Goreng become a hero too late?

In The Platform, there weren't any hard rules. People just had to stay on their level, keep the objects they came in with (even if it was a weapon), and eat whatever was on the table. They could eat the dish they asked for that would be served every day, or they could eat other people's food. That was the masters wanting to see who was selfish or who was considerate. The Platform 2 tweaks things, namely showing there is a weird law and order being established.

The new rules are: eat yours, leave what's not yours, and there will be peace and harmony. This has been set up by a mysterious overlord in the complex. He is the "messiah" -- a blind man named Dagin Babi. He has a cult called the Anointed Ones who oversee this law. Anyone who breaks it and consumes more than they should are called Barbarians: expendable zealots who must die. This religious status quo also has militant chains of communication, complete with dictatorial, fascist and oppressive themes.

Outside Dagin Babi, the main lead is Perempuan, a Spanish woman who places herself in the jail. She is joined by a man who looks like Marvel's Kingpin, Zamiatin. Together, they must navigate the hole. They have to deal with personal issues with each other, secrets in their own history, and which side they want to pick in the jail. There is a revolution happening, with the Anointed Ones and the Barbarians going to war.

Bodies are being thrown down the hole, some are being maimed on the food table, and others are being killed on various levels. Some people are even going to be set on fire, making it clear the battle is going to be more heated than before. Trimagasi also has a key role to play in the new journey. Once again, this is a statement about whether society is willing to erase classism, elitism, and share with each other.

Platform 2 Has a Kindergarten Level

The Platform 2 features a new level with children. This seemingly confirms Goreng wasn't dreaming in the first movie, and that he did save a child. This adds another layer of intrigue to the story, which gets viewers to question why there are children present in such a barbaric place where adults are at their worst.

Children aren't supposed to be present, per the rules from the first movie. By changing this rule, this establishes that the masters have double standards, secrets of their own, or new tests and games to manipulate people, similar to Jigsaw from the Saw movies. Once again, there will be bombshells to come as to the zeitgeist in this jail and how people ought to operate to survive.

Milena Smit is the Spanish actor who plays Perempuan. She is clearly shaped as a rebel who must fight the new system, which may well be both sides. She starred in the supernatural Netflix series, The Girl in the Mirror. Hovik Keuchkerian plays Zamiatin, who was previously in 2016's Assassin's Creed as Ojeda. He initially conceived The Platform as a one-and-done feature, but the popularity of the movie got him to work with Netflix again. He loves these stories about wealth and the commentary about whether people can treat each other fairly. It's something shows like Squid Game explored as well.

Apart from The Platform movies, which some deem as horrors on Netflix, he will be releasing Rich Flu with Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
